A single-run color for the Dripper S, developed with Maruyoshi Kosaka and drawn from the iron-rich clay beneath Kiso lacquerware.

ORIGAMI released this color alongside its collaboration with Maruyoshi Kosaka, the Kiso lacquerware studio known for hand-painted urushi work. The Dripper S in sabi takes its name and its palette from sabitsuchi, the iron-rich clay traditionally used as an undercoat in Kiso lacquerware. Where most ORIGAMI colors are flat and consistent, this one uses a reactive glaze, so no two pieces come out quite the same. It's a small departure for a dripper built around precision, and one that suits a collaboration rooted in handwork.

Developed at ORIGAMI's Own Factory

The color was developed at Koyo Toki, the factory that manufactures every ORIGAMI dripper, timed to the release of the ORIGAMI x Maruyoshi Kosaka collaboration pieces. The base is a soft cream reminiscent of sabitsuchi itself, and a glaze suggesting suki-urushi, the clear amber lacquer used in traditional finishing work, is sprayed over it. Iron specks suspended in the base surface as warm flecks against the cream, and the natural gloss ceramic takes on gives the piece a quiet, settled look, closer to wabi-sabi than to a uniform factory finish.

That unevenness is the point. Because the glaze is reactive, firing brings out its color differently piece to piece: some lean warmer, others show more of the iron speckling. Maruyoshi Kosaka has spent decades letting the same kind of variation define its lacquerware, founded in 1945 along Nagano's old Nakasendo road in the Kiso valley, and this collaboration color carries a version of that same idea into porcelain.

The Dripper

Underneath the finish, this is the standard ORIGAMI Dripper S. Twenty vertical ribs run down the inside wall, spacing the paper filter away from the dripper's body so air and hot water can move past each other instead of the pour stalling out. It works with both conical and wave paper filters, and the two shapes pull noticeably different cups from the same coffee: wave filters use a thinner bed of grounds and drain faster, while conical filters build a deeper bed with more contrast between the top and bottom of the pour. Sized for one to two cups, it suits a solo brew or a shared pour without switching tools.
