A porcelain tasting cup with a thin rim on one side and a thick rim on the other, so you can read acidity and aroma from one edge and body and texture from the other
When you evaluate a coffee at the brew bar or on a cupping table, the cup is part of the assessment. Rim thickness changes how the liquid enters the mouth: how much arrives at once, how fast it moves, and where it lands on the palate. That decides whether acidity and aromatics register first, or sweetness and body.
The ORIGAMI Sensory Asymmetry Cup is a porcelain cup from ORIGAMI's Sensory Series, made in Japan with a rim that is thin on one side and thick on the other. Turn it in your hand and you taste the same coffee two ways, with a comfortable fit at the lip from either side. It comes in White and Black.
How the Sensory Asymmetry Cup Changes the Sip
ORIGAMI shaped the cup around where coffee travels on the tongue. Sipped from the thin side, the coffee flows toward the back of the tongue. According to ORIGAMI, this brings forward aroma and floral notes, makes acidity easier to perceive, and draws out the finish.
Sipped from the thick side, the coffee lands at the front and center of the tongue. ORIGAMI describes the result as sweeter and richer, with heavier body and more texture. The outer wall follows the change in rim thickness, so the foot sits visibly offset from one side to the other.
The Sensory Series is ORIGAMI's professional line, made for baristas who serve in competition. In a judged service or at the café bar, you can suggest a drinking side to match the coffee in front of the guest: its origin, process, roast level, or whether it is served with milk.

Serving with the Sensory Asymmetry Cup
Pour your brew into the cup, taste from the thin side, then turn it and taste from the thick side. In a tasting flight, this gives you two readings of one coffee from a single vessel, which is useful when you are dialing in a recipe or calibrating with your team.
ORIGAMI suggests serving it with a teaspoon set on the saucer, so the guest can stir as they drink and pick up more of the coffee's aroma and flavor as it cools.
The porcelain body is heat resistant to 120°C (248°F) and safe for dishwashers and microwave ovens.
The Asymmetric Rim
• Thin side: Directs coffee toward the back of the tongue, bringing forward acidity, aromatics, and a longer finish.
• Thick side: Places coffee at the front and center of the tongue for more sweetness, body, and texture.
The Kiln-Fired Rim and Sensory Colors
The cup is fired in the kiln mouth down. This leaves the rim unglazed, so your lip meets bare porcelain at the edge while the rest of the body carries a full glaze.
It is offered in White and Black, the two colors of the Sensory Series. The black cup works as a blind: it hides the color of the liquid, so the taster reads aroma and flavor without visual cues shaping their expectations.
