Characteristics of Porcelain

Characteristics of Porcelain

The following characteristics may be observed in porcelain products of the UFO, ORIGAMI, 2-WayCup, and April brands that we distribute, including items that have passed all inspections and are shipped as approved products. These phenomena are intrinsic to the porcelain or glass manufacturing process and are considered natural product characteristics, not defects.

Logo Bleeding or Blurring

When a logo is applied using an underglaze painting technique, meaning it is printed beneath the glaze layer, during firing, the logo may partially fuse with the glaze, resulting in slight blurring or bleeding. Because the logo is sealed under the glaze, it will not fade or peel with normal use.

Iron Spots

Although the porcelain appears white, the clay naturally contains trace amounts of iron. During firing, this iron may oxidize and appear as small black spots on the surface. This is a common and natural characteristic of porcelain.

Pinholes

Some glazed pieces may have tiny indentations resembling pinholes. These occur when organic matter on the surface burns away during firing, leaving small depressions. This is a typical ceramic phenomenon and does not indicate a defect.

Individual Variations in Glaze (Color & Texture)

Porcelain is influenced by natural factors such as seasonal conditions, kiln temperature, glaze composition, and firing intensity. As a result, items made from the same materials may vary slightly in color and texture. Even products labeled as the same color may differ in tone depending on the production period (e.g., darker or lighter finishes).

Uneven Color and Texture

Glaze thickness can vary depending on the shape and thickness of each piece. Additionally, exposure to heat during firing may result in subtle variations in color and texture within a single item. These variations contribute to the unique character of each piece.

Examples include:

  • Uneven coloration

  • Fine surface irregularities

  • Small surface holes

Weight & Size Variations

Due to differences in production lots and glaze application, individual variations in weight and size may occur even among identical products. As a result, the actual dimensions and weight may differ slightly from those listed on the product page.
