Borosilicate glass was chosen because it handles thermal stress without issues, moving from a cold counter to a hot brew and back again without the risk of cracking that comes with ordinary glass. Glass is non-porous, meaning it does not hold flavor between brews and does not interfere with what is in the cup.

The body shape was not accidental. The wider diameter at the belly of the carafe creates the room needed for an effective swirl. Swirling a finished brew, even briefly, allows the coffee to open up, softening sharp edges and letting the natural acidity come forward without bitterness.
